04/07 Sahara Desert, Morocco

We woke up at 0600 and packed things for 2night dessert tour!!!!!! We waited at the hostel and 2guys came at 0700 and collect the balance of the fee. We paid €55 in total which was acceptable. Then, we followed the guys to the square with the others. There were coaches in the square. Because it was very early, the street and the square did not have many people. We got into a coach and there were two Dutch girls. Later, more and more people came inside and we have 10people in total, which was really good. 5 of them.including Santiago were Spanish speaking people and 2 Dutch girls, 2 Portugese girls and 1 boy from hk which was me LOL.

The coach left from Marrakesh to Zagora where was the door to Sahara desert and the travel time was around 7 hours as it was really far away from Marrakesh. We got off at some intermediate stops to buy snacks, go to toilets. On our way, a Dutch girl did not feel well and she felt dizzy. Suddenly the coach stopped and she opened the gate and splited over the road. She then sat at the front with her friend. The driver played some nixes musics during our journey and Santiago started to talk to others in Spanish and I felt asleep many times.

Few hours later, we stopped at a restaurants to have lunch. We sat with the dutch girls and chatted with them. One of them spoke good English. I ordered rice with vegetables and a bottle of water which costed 95dh, which was a bit expensive. We had lunch for 1 hour and continued to Zagora. On our way, the driver stopped at some scenic spots to take pictures.

One stop at Aït Ben haddou, which was a nice village and also one of a scene of a series that I did not know.

The buildings looked really nice and we went up to the top and the view from the top was also nice. I took a Polaroid there which was nice.

We spent half an hour there and got back to the coach. We also stopped at a film museum. Although it was just 15dh for group, it really sucked. Everything inside was so fake. The only thing that was worth doing inside was to take picture of the armchair.

We then got inside the coach and headed towards Zagora. Everyone seemed tired and slept. Around 1800, we arrived at Zagora and bought some snacks and water to get inside the dessert.
After few more minutes drive, we got off at a place where few camels were lying down and waiting for us!!! Two Moroccans came and helped us to get on the camels.

He put my water inside the blanket on the camels' back. As there was a kind of handrail on the camel's back he helped me tie my bag on it and asked me to hold tight the handrail and then sit on the camel!!! Then, they standed up. Wow. I was on the camel, which was so fun. Others also got on their camels and then we all started to move to our campsite. The camel was cute. My hips started to feel painful as when it moved, my body also moved up and down and up, which was quite tiring. The sunset came and we could see our  shadow reflected on the sand which was so cool.

Somw of the spanish guys also aang songs. Although we only were on the edge of Sahara desert, we barely saw houses but only sandtunes and those rugged mountains which was a very nice experience. At some point, some people camel felt sth wrong and stopped moving but we finally made it at our campsite. I thought we were on the camels for 45mins.

We got off and stepped on the Sahara desert!!!. We were all surrounded by sand. At that time, it was already 2000 and it was getting dark. We then walked to our campsite. We and two Spanish speaking boys stayed in the same tent. And out tent was called ERG. It was very warm inside but quite stuffy.

But the bed was fine. But it did not have pillow. We were going to sleep in the desert!!! There were many chairs at the centre of the campsite. We 10 sat on them and chatted a bit. Then, the Moroccans gathered us on a blanket and handed us their tea to every each of us. The tea was very sweet and tasty as they put many sugars in it.

Then, we had dinner in a small house and we had soup and chicken with vegetables which were nice. I chatted a little with a Portuguese girl who also knew some german so we practiced some German together. I sat with four girls and all of them were really nice. One Dutch girl told me not to buy orange juice in the square because the bottles they used were not clean and not sealed and you did not know how they make the orange juice as it was high and they make it behind a wall of oranges. What she said made sense. We finished our dinner and we took a picture inside the nice dinning room.

After the dinner, we had a kind of little party outside the dinning house. They played their drums with hands and the music was typical here but very beautiful. Their hands were like automatic as they played drums very fast.

The song was really nice and later they asked us to play drums. They handed one drum to the Portuguese girl sitting next to me and she played a bit and then passed it to me. Then, I tried to play a rhythm but no very well. Other group of people, not 10 of us, did not look exciting to their show and not enthusiastic about playing the drums.

It ends around 1000, some went to sleep and we and others lay down the blanket, watched over the sky and stars. There were some many stars over the sky as there was no light in our campsite after the party and of course in the desert as well. There was complete silence and darkness in the desert which was really cool. We kept silent and watched over the stars. Some were shining and some were very dim. Suddenly I saw a falling star!!!! I thought something wrong with eyes but the Portuguese girl also said she saw it. Wow, my first falling star in Sahara Desert. Few minutes later, another star fell too. But unfortunately Santiago did not catch both times.

We watched the stars till 1100 and got back to our ERG to have a sleep in the Sahara desert. What a memorable day in the Sahara desert. I am not going to forget this wonderful and the coolest experience in Morocco!!!!
